Oakland SAVES: The $5 Million Initiative to Help Residents of Oakland County Improve Their Home’s Efficiency and Reduce Energy Costs.

Oakland County is collaborating with Michigan Saves to help at least 1,000 Oakland County homes move to a more energy-efficient blueprint, reducing energy costs for working families.
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners, working with County Executive Dave Coulter’s administration and Chief Sustainability Officer Erin Quetell, designated $5 million of the county’s American Recovery Plan (ARP) funds for the Oakland SAVES (Simple Actions for Valuable Energy Savings) grant program, administered by Michigan Saves, to help make environmentally sustainable improvements to income-qualified and other households.
The $5 million program will consist of two tiers of grants. The first tier will leverage $4 million for grants of up to $5,000 for income-qualified households. The second tier will utilize the remaining funds ($1 million) to pay up to 20 percent of a sustainable home improvement, capped at $3,000, for any Oakland County household.
Tier 1 Customers: $5,000.00 ($4 Million)
- Approval based on income and number of persons living in the home
- Must provide last year’s taxes
- Michigan Saves asks that residents have page one of their 2022 1040 form (not the entire filing). For residence filing a 1040-SR, pages one and two will be required.
- To qualify for this incentive, your annual household taxable income must be at or below the following levels:
Tier 2 Customers: 20% up to $3,000.00 Cap ($1 Million)
- Available to any Oakland Resident that does not qualify for Tier 1
- Tax information is not required
Anything exceeding $15,000 they Cap out at $3,000.00 of FREE money
Some of the environmentally friendly upgrades that qualify for the Oakland SAVES grants include ENERGY STAR water heaters, ENERGY STAR air conditioners, ENERGY STAR furnaces, ENERGY STAR thermostats, attic insulation, air sealing, basement wall or crawlspace insulation, door weather-stripping, duct insulation, floor insulation, wall insulation, ENERGY STAR doors, and ENERGY STAR windows.
To take advantage of these funds, customers will first need a quote from an authorized contractor (e.g., Randazzo Heating, Cooling, and Electrical – Contractor #100246) to include on their program application.
This program will be available until Dec. 31, 2025, or until the funds are depleted. However, it is important to note this is a first come, first serve opportunity.
**Important Information** *Funds can be used to replace equipment that is at least seven years old or failed. The contractor must provide documentation that the existing equipment meets this condition.
